What Is the Priddis Millarville Fair?
The Priddis Millarville Fair is an annual agricultural and community fair held at the Millarville Racing and Agricultural Society grounds in Millarville, Alberta. It brings together the traditions of the surrounding foothills communities, including the historic Priddis area, into a single celebration that honours rural heritage while welcoming families, visitors, and curious newcomers from Calgary and beyond.
The fair traces its roots to the agricultural society that has long served the Millarville district. The grounds sit about 45 minutes southwest of Calgary, making it a straightforward day trip from the city. Expect a relaxed, community-first atmosphere rather than a polished theme park experience. That authenticity is exactly what draws people back year after year.
The event typically runs over a weekend in late summer, though dates can shift slightly from year to year. Check the Millarville Racing and Agricultural Society website for confirmed dates before you head out. Admission is generally charged at the gate, and most activities are included with entry.
Top Things to See and Do at the Priddis Millarville Fair
The Priddis Millarville Fair packs a surprising variety of activities into its fairgrounds. Agricultural exhibits are a cornerstone of the event, showcasing livestock, homegrown produce, and handmade crafts entered by local residents. These exhibits give visitors a window into the working farm life that defines the Millarville and Priddis communities.
Kids have plenty to keep them busy, from petting areas and interactive barn demonstrations to fair games and entertainment on the main stage. Live music and local performances run throughout the day, so there’s almost always something happening if you wander toward the stage area.
If you want to build on your interest in the grounds beyond fair weekend, the facility offers a range of year-round programming. Clinics and lessons are available for riders of varying skill levels, and the riding membership program gives regular visitors ongoing access to the property. The fair is a great introduction, but it is far from the only reason to visit Millarville.
Horse Racing and Equine Highlights
Horse racing is woven into the DNA of the Millarville Racing and Agricultural Society, and its headline race day is the Canada Day Races. Race day at Millarville is a community tradition unlike anything you’ll find at a commercial track. The atmosphere is relaxed and close to the action, with spectators standing near the rail and the thunder of hooves feeling genuinely immediate.
For anyone curious about the broader racing scene in the province, our horse racing Alberta page covers what makes Millarville a standout stop on the foothills circuit. Check the fair programme for this year’s equine line-up.
Beyond the races themselves, equine activities at the fair can include breed demonstrations, show jumping, and other displays that highlight the skill of both horse and rider. The equine activities available through the society run year-round, so if the fair sparks your interest, there are easy ways to stay connected with the horses and the community after the weekend ends.
Food, Vendors, and the Farmers Market
No fair is complete without good food, and Millarville delivers on that front. The fairgrounds host a range of food vendors serving everything from classic fair staples to locally sourced options that reflect the agricultural character of the region. Arriving hungry is a perfectly reasonable strategy.
The Millarville Farmers Market runs separately from the fair but shares the same grounds and the same commitment to local producers. If you’re planning a visit and want to understand the full scope of what the market offers, our farmers market Calgary page is a helpful starting point. We’ve also put together a longer guide on the best farmers markets near Calgary if you want to compare options across the region.
Craft vendors and artisan booths round out the shopping experience at the Priddis Millarville Fair. Local makers bring jewellery, textiles, woodwork, and other handmade goods that you won’t find at a standard mall. It’s worth budgeting extra time, and maybe a little extra cash, for a browse through the vendor area.
How to Get to Millarville
Getting to the Priddis Millarville Fair is straightforward from Calgary. Head south on Macleod Trail or Deerfoot Trail to Highway 22X, then travel west until you reach Highway 22 South. Follow Highway 22 south toward Millarville and watch for signs directing you to the fairgrounds. The drive typically takes 40 to 50 minutes from central Calgary, depending on traffic leaving the city.
Parking on the grounds is available, though it fills up quickly on busy fair days. Arriving earlier in the morning gives you the best chance of a short walk to the entrance. Carpooling with friends or family is a practical option that also helps keep traffic moving smoothly on the roads leading in.
If you’re planning to stay overnight and extend your trip, the society’s Creekside and Island Campground offers on-site camping. Staying the night means you can enjoy the evening programming without rushing back to the city, and it gives you more time to explore the surrounding foothills landscape at your own pace.
Plan Your Visit to the Millarville Fairgrounds
A little planning goes a long way at the Priddis Millarville Fair. Wear comfortable shoes because the grounds cover a fair amount of ground on grass and gravel. Sunscreen and a hat are worth packing for the open sections of the property, especially if the weather is clear. Layers are always a smart call in the Alberta foothills, where temperatures can shift through the day.
The Upper Hall is a key venue on the property and worth a look during your visit. If your group is interested in hosting an event of your own, facility booking through the society gives you access to a range of spaces on the grounds throughout the year.
Dogs are welcome on leash in many outdoor areas, but check current fair guidelines before bringing a pet. Cash is handy for smaller vendors and games, though many booths also accept card payments. Plan to spend at least half a day, but a full day is easy to fill if you take in the races, the exhibits, the food, and the entertainment.
